Order from Pahl's in the early spring (Jade Butterflies Ginkgo). Can bring this home in my car. High price here. $270.
Order all others from Gertens in the early spring. Consider the burlap ball pots. Maybe $250 per tree average. Have delivered (+$130)
Checked 4/22/22 -- [2022 Gertens Retail Catalog] is available now.. all trees are listed on it in 20# .. All are showing out of stock. Might be good to call. Will be 4 trees at approximately $250 apiece. $1200-$1300 delivered.
4/23/22 -- Called Gertens in early AM. Said they have lots of crabapple availability. Went to Gertens & found all three crabapple pots in 20# .. hand selected 3, paid for & marked for delivery on 4/26. Said they would call ahead on 4/25. They did not have any Red Rocket Maple pots. The tree expert on duty said they may have B&B Red Rocket Maples, but they would likely have them available in pots in the next few weeks. Will continue checking the website & calling (as he said).
4/26/22 -- They were delivered street-side around 4:15PM. Literally, street-side. Don't know why Gerten's asked me what part of the driveway to place them on if they were just going to dump them next to the curb.
4/27/22 -- Began work at 3:30PM. Holes dug (18" deep, 40" wide) x3, discovered our Pink Spires was accidentally an Emerald Spires. Oops, children rushed over & found the Pink Spires row at Gerten's excitedly (it was the last discovery).. but I recall getting distracted & didn't check tags. Don't ever, ever trust rows.. only tags. So, an Emerald Spires is the same height (~20'), but it is half the width (only 6'). Not a big deal, as the Royal Raindrops Crabapple next to it (~8 years old) will likely serve as the additional layer of a long-term privacy screen to the back porch/pool of a backyard neighbor. The objectives for the Pink Spires was more color, a privacy screen, and additional fruit for birds/animals. The Emerald Spires will serve the purpose just fine. We will add Pink Spires back onto the list for 2023-2024. I was greeted by a total of 4 male mallard ducks & 1 female mallard duck this evening. Very tiring (~12 wheelbarrows), but I successfully traded spots with the duck at the pond to let him take a bath & a nap. A beautiful evening (~55F & sunny) in Burnsville to work outdoors. Ended work at 7:45PM.
4/28/22 -- Plan to begin planting the Louisa Crabapple at the pond today. Encountered a lot of large gravel/sand near the pond at 1 foot depth. We encountered a small backyard drainage field while hand excavating the pond -- lots of pea gravel & clay pipe. So, we will backfill the bottom & sides with our DIY compost.
5/16/22 -- Seeing no growth on 2020's Honeycrisp Apple & Montmorency Cherry. Sad, this was bad soil & we had a drought in summer 2021. Declaring these dead & will likely dig up & not directly replace in 2022.. rather with fruit tree ideas in spring 2023. Should be completely different soil conditions 3 years later. We will ensure we are using lots of brassica & legume in the wildlife food plots to serve as nitrogen for these newer ornamental & fruit trees we are growing.
8/1/22 -- The Swiss Stone Pine on the front boulevard has long since been declared dead & has been removed. I did transplant it in The Pit & will take care of it, just in case. It has no contention for moisture there & will be surrounded by nitrogen next Spring. The Swiss Stone Pine's area was replaced with Triton. The Honeycrisp Apple & Montmorency Cherry were declared dead two weeks ago, dug up & replaced with 2x transplanted Jostaberries that were outgrowing their areas in ElizaBerries. I have watered these Jostaberries heavily several times since (we are in a D2 drought). I was visiting Gerten's today for bird food & decided to check on their stock of the Red Rocket Maple. They had about 10 of them. I selected one, and I selected one Jade Butterfly Ginkgo. They will be delivered on 8/9/22 by Gerten's Commercial, I believe. Delivery was only $60 due to the Red Rocket Maple being tall, she was able to get a better rate ($130 vs $60). Nice touch. About $650 delivered, should be nice.
8/2/22 -- I dug a 4'x4'x2' square near the driveway & front walkway where I thought a 35'x12' tree (Red Rocket Maple) would look nice as a replacement for the ~1963 Maple tree currently living on the boulevard. This location selected will bring morning & afternoon shade to different, important zones of the front yard. The colors of the Red Rocket Maple should be a very nice feature, and the birds will hang out in it all the time, I think. We'll find out. I chose to dig about 1 foot parallel to my low-voltage landscape wire run to the front lamp post (that I installed). I avoided the interaction with the low-voltage wire zone. Tons of sand & rocks, clearly construction back-fill. I even found parts of a green glass pop/beer bottle. A good decision to move 8 wheelbarrows of sand/rocks out of it to The Pit. We'll replace it with black dirt from The Pit. This soil will be much more rich & have a lot better water retention in the 1-2 foot zone of the tree's hole. We'll do this for both trees. The 2012 Autumn Gold Ginkgo trees planted on the boulevard has had a very rough life finding nutrients, but they are actually creating better soil now. Neither tree ever showed any stress during a drought. No insect issues either. They took about 6-8 years to really get enough power to build new branching & go upward. Big trunks now. Very beautiful trees though.. The Jade Butterfly Ginkgo will sit in the middle of the 2x Autumn Gold Ginkgo boulevard trees. We'll apply bonsai to it over the years to build a nice tree. This will be my interpretation of a boulevard.
