Dwarf Essex Rape
Decided to use Hairy Vetch as a nurse crop with Winter Rye & broadcast it early after reading Albert Lea Seed's advice on the combo. There will be lots of tall forage for the Hairy Vetch to climb on, including the temporary fencing & fence posts. Should look very cool by the end of October. Want to keep this particular plot's ground busy 12 months a year to simulate farming.
Plot is receiving 30-60 minute bursts of sprinkler water due to nearby young tree water requirements & Lawns 2 Legumes - Plot Delta. Hoping to see some activity out of this plot, or we should consider a late Hairy Vetch or Sorghum Sudangrass 'Sweet 6' Dry Stalk BMR broadcast around the perimeter of this plot. Very hot plot. Not seeing much Crimson Clover or Dwarf Essex Rape seedlings. Thatch is pretty thick, so broadcasting many be troublesome.
Perennial rape is beginning to flower out at roughly 36" in height. Very pretty. Alfalfa is not far behind at 30-34" height. The bed of compost will definitely protect against dandelion seed flying around & setting up easily. Seeing the first few crimson clover seedlings popping out. Compost was placed maybe 1/2" thick average across Titan (minus the center) on 5/3/22. Expecting to see some rape seedlings soon. This should be a very colorful plot around my birthday (July 30th) -- fingers crossed.
Plot has re-growth coming in the middle, where the rape & alfalfa were planted last year (2021). Appears to be rape & alfalfa. Will monitor.
