Stock Seed - Stock's Wildflower Mix
All done. Lots of root extraction today. Some use of the Root Slayer & garden hoe. All main roots cut with a Fiskars pruning saw & used for art. I raked several hills for an interesting terrain. Elizabeth & Samuel helped with the root art & seeding. Lots of learning to reach the point of tossing seeds. It was a good day. We worked on a rabbit hut in Triton as our real-life Minecraft today. My birthday.
More excavation continues today. I paused about a week ago & ordered a Radius Garden Root Slayer XL. Today was 4 x 30 minute sessions. All sod has been long removed. We are working on lowering the hexagon & removing all major roots. We have also been greeted by a large amount of tangled Maple roots. We are now using the Root Slayer XL, a 4 foot crowbar, and a Bully Tools rake. We are at about 8-10 inches depth at this point across the main Hexagon, finishing up the larger root extractions. Looking very nice. Root Slayer XL is a low-leverage destroyer. The mound is at about 4 feet high at this point. I would say 3 x 30 minute sessions remain to declaring it a good seed bed for Outsidepride 'Deer Greens'. Remaining work items are the main root extraction, 3rd tree hole excavation (due to main root), lowering the front zones (donate excess dirt to Enceladus), and raking relatively level across the entire Hexagon.
We are expecting rain tonight, so that should help it settle. Lots of good hair-like roots everywhere after the Root Slayer XL sessions, should be good for the new flowers & ornamental trees here. We have killed all major roots, so all downstream roots will now become long-term fertilizer.
Good job Dad. Our kitty windspinner looks nice atop the pile. We have a gigantic pile of nice Maple roots to use as decoration/edge borders.
Once we remove the deceased Swiss Stone Pine in the center, we will build a large dirt mound (~3-4 feet) in its place.
Half of the sod has now been removed in the hexagon (as of 7/10). We received a few heavy rains to help dig. The large Maple tree (~60 years old) near this plot has near-ground roots trying to go through this plot, so I'll be doing some root hacking to remove the largest ones. We plan to remove this Maple tree in the next 5 years, so all the Maple roots become a lot of fertilizer for this plot, long-term.
Target depth is about 6-12 inches deep across the entire hexagon, with 2 exceptions.
Exception #1 - there will be 3 ornamental trees, each marked with a green cone. Each of these locations will need a 24" tree hole.
Exception #2 - The center will be a large dirt mound. This can realistically go as high as we can build it. We'll use this region to grow tall, ornamental grasses & flowers later... such as Chinese Silver Grass, Hollyhocks, Wild Sunflowers, etc.
