Outsidepride 'Sweet Spot' Deer Food Plot - Northern Mix
Finished doing a hand power rake, worked very well to setup good seed to soil contact. Broadcasted & hand watered very thoroughly to sink the seeds in. Will follow-up with a few watering sessions by hand or sprinkler to set them up fast. Should look very nice compared to the sad pit of mulch & random overgrown Tall Fescue it was before. Tulips are just a component of a garden.
Began & finished removing all landscape edgers, bricks, Western Red Cedar mulch & old smoking wood to find bare soil in all areas of Io. Looks pretty good, will run a rake through most of it & seed it. Decided to use 'Sweet Spot' for the high-sugar grasses & high protein selections. This will attract rabbits, turkeys & deer, as a result. We really want to keep this plot lower to the ground, as our 2 terriers used to enjoy looking through it, towards the street.
I have taken away their access to this Io fenceline to build the turf/clover mix, but this should be remembered. Lots of tall plants are not desired here.
The large exception here to raking is the zone near the 4x4 which houses the bird house & the LiteAP. There is an outdoor, black category 5e cable ran through here. I did drop a small amount of Prairie 7 in this zone around the 4x4 post about 2 weeks ago, so I'd prefer to not move the seeds around.
We'll use the Deer Greens as a soil development tool & fertilizer for the 2023 Tulips. Not looking for tall perennials here, as I want our terriers to be able to see through it in the Spring/Summer. We are looking for weed control & nitrogen scavengers here though. This would be an excellent plot in future years for Winter Rye or Winter Wheat as a Fall/Winter cover crop to recycle nutrients. We want to specifically use Brassica here in 2022 though. The Holland Tulips should produce more flowers as a result. We will find out.
Decided to wait. Tulips are finishing up for the year in the next week. Io will be ready for maintenance on June 1st. I think we'll pull up all stray mulch & broadcast these directly on the soil. There's too much mulch here to just simply broadcast over top.
This might be tricky with the tulips coming in. Lightly cover with compost. Tulips won't care & will push through.
